Iran Labor Ministry Reports Provincial Share of GDP

Reported by HPMM Group according to FINANCIAL TRIBUNE ; The Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare’s Center of Statistics has published Iran’s provincial share of GDP for the fiscal 2015-16.

Tehran Province, wherein lies the capital city, contributed the most to the economy, both inclusive and exclusive of oil.

South Khorasan had the least contribution of all Iranian provinces including oil production and Ilam’s GDP share was the smallest excluding oil.

The report also shows per capita GDP of Bushehr was the biggest among all provinces and that of Sistan-Baluchestan was the smallest.

Many of the highest ranking provinces, like Khuzestan, have oil propelling their economies. The ministry’s data show oil had the biggest share in the GDP of Khuzestan and Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad provinces and the smallest share in the GDP of North Khorasan, Sistan-Baluchestan and Kurdestan.

Iran’s total GDP stood at 12.31 quadrillion rials ($293 billion). Excluding oil, Iran’s GDP stood at 10.68 quadrillion rials ($254.28 billion). Oil comprised 13.2% of country’s GDP, with oil to GDP ratio less than 1% in 18 provinces, 1-20% in 10 provinces and over 20% in three provinces.

Six provinces made up more than half of Iran’s total GDP in 2015-16 and the remaining 50% was divided among 25 provinces.

Tehran and Khuzestan together accounted for 38% of the country’s total GDP. Tehran, with 13 million inhabitants, accounted for close to one-fourth of the total GDP.

The combined GDP of six provinces, namely South Khorasan, North Khorasan, Ilam, Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, Semnan and Kurdestan, accounted for one-fifth of Tehran’s GDP.

GDP rankings change considerably when the highly profitable petroleum sector is excluded. As mentioned above, Tehran was the main contributor to the country’s GDP without oil.

Its non-oil production stood at 2.88 quadrillion rials ($68.5 billion), more than a quarter of country’s total GDP. Isfahan came as a distant second with the GDP of 672 trillion rials ($16 billion). Ilam, South Khorasan and Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad had the smallest share in non-oil production.
